DCnU finally here
I guess we all did the same thing yesterday.
I wandered into my local comic shop, possibly more excited than I have ever been to buy a comic. I gazed at the shelves containing this week’s new releases and muttered to assistant how bare it was. She laughed. As I reached out to pick up Flashpoint issue 5, she looked at me and said “here, you’ll want this,” and handed me issue 1 of the new Justice League. Handing over the least money I had ever paid on a Wednesday, I walked out of the shop, happier than anything.
Now I’ve had my chance to read through the two comics, I must confess I have over joyed by how they turned out. I’m a little bit upset that there really seemed to be no continuity between DCU and DCnU, but I guess it might not have been easy. All we really need to know is that it starts again from here. I won’t talk much about DCU (what’s the point), but I will mention a few things I’ve noticed about JL1.
First of all, I love the writing. Hal as Green Lantern was as witty as every, and Bats was as gritty as I’d expect. Supes, of course, comes across once again as the ultimate boy scout, which means that DC are playing to each characters strengths right off the bat. I enjoyed Jim Lee’s excellent artwork – I have a feeling that this is going to be a new stage in comics, as we see more and more beautiful drawings brought to life on our pages.
I also note that Justice League is called just that, and there is no America tacked on to the end. I hope that we don’t see Superman being considered a US citizen any more. I look forward to seeing what other subtle changes there are when I pick up the new books.
Let me know what you think!
